MAPS!
Today we were given three maps and we had to label nine things. We had to label the equator, the prime meridian, the nation(s) of your origin, all seven continents, all five oceans, the international date line, tropic of Capricorn, the tropic cancer, and John Carroll. The international Date line is the line that separates one day and the next. It is imaginary so their ins't actually a line down the earth. Also the tropics of Capricorn and cancer are called this because the sun was positioned in the Cancer constellation during the June solstice and the tropic of Capricorn was named because the constipation Capricorn was visible in that area.

The World Map Is Wrong
The World Map is wrong! On the map that is mostly used around the world it has some parts that are geologically wrong, this map is called The Traditional Mercator Map. This map is wrong because Greenland is enlarged and Africa is minimized. This is wrong because geographically green land in much much more smaller that Africa and Africa is much much bigger. Also on the map Alaska is enlarged too and it looks like to me the size of Mexico or even bigger, when really Alaska is maybe 1/2 the size. Lastly this map is wrong because South America isn't the right proportion compared to the other continents as well.

Today's Tubular Notes
In today's class notes we talked about our new unit. Our new unit is about Maps. This unit will be on, explaining differences between early maps and recent maps, describing the role of map scale and projections and making maps. Lastly we will be explaining how latitude and longitude locate places on a map. Geography is the study of where things are found on earths surface and the reasons for the locations. The first world map was made between 279-194 BC. The Mediterranean sea is called that because in the early time when the first maps were made they believed that they were the center of everything.

Today's Test
Today we had a test. I didn't study as much as I probably should've but I'm not worried. Human Geo and Social Studies are my strong subjects so I believe I got a good score. I only had trouble with one thing and that was "what is two other meanings of polis" other than that the test was pretty easy. When I first heard that there was gonna be an essay on the quiz, I thought to myself "oh crap, this is going to be hard but when I figured out what the question was for the essay I was super relieved.

Also he was charged with impiety. impiety is not believing in the gods of they state. Also we learned that Socrates was the "father of democracy and without him the world would've been totally different. Also we learned that the way he dies was drinking the hemlock.

Todays Class notes
Today's class was about democracy in its earlier beginning stages. It all started in Athens, Rome. Athens Rome attracted a lot of brilliant thinkers which is why the economy was so extravagant back then for the time. Visitors from all over the world would share their meteorology, literature, philosophy, and all things scientific. One man named Socrates questioned the Roman government and thought other people and the youth about his ideas. This was against the laws back then because the government didn't want people think for their own because then there would be a change they would over through the government if they didn't like what was happening. And that's what happened. Since Socrates thought differently and told over people about it that got people thinking. After a little while Socrates was arrested and put on trial. The thing is, is that when he was on trail he didn't deny what he did. After the jury came to a verdict, he was sentence guilty but out of a 500 person jury 221 of they said innocent which is pretty big because a little while ago they all would have said guilty. Sadly though he was sentenced to death and he had to drink poison. After his death democracy was born. Democracy is what happens is by the will and say of the people. So, if the were all voting whether or not to pave a road every citizen would vote yes or no. After everyone has voted, someone would say what happens next and what ever side had more votes, the action would be or not be taken place. Also during this time people would speak and say why or why not the road should be paved. For example if someone that sells jars full of olive oil would say "I want the road paved because it very bumpy and some of my jars always break. But if someone that doesn't want the road paved would say something too like,"I sell clothing and it works just fine for me so I don't want to have to waste tax money that I paid on something useful for me. And that is democracy unlike before where there was a king and he would tell everyone what to do and when to do it when he sees fit. This is how democracy works and how it was created.

Class Notes
In class today we learned about democracy and many things that are related to it. The people who created this are the Greeks. we also learned about the people who made this happen. One of the people was Socrates. He was a stone mason and he fought in the Peloponnese war. But because of his working class and battlefield back round it must have shaped the way he viewed the world. He also would meet with you people in workshops just out side the agora. A agora is a middle/center place where everyone would go. Its a gather place filled with athletics, artistic, spiritual, and political life.

Today's Class Notes On The Message to Garcia
Today's notes were about a lot of things. The main thing was The Message to Garcia. The Message to Garcia was a letter that was sent to the war general in Cuba fighting the Spanish from the US president at the time. This all took place during the Spanish-American war in 1899. Elbert Hubbard wrote all this down at the time and created a short story/booklet the share with the public what excellence is and what it looks like to work hard in life. His main reason for doing this is because at the time, people were slacking off at their job and not putting forth effort to do thing that needed to be done. This book sold over 40 million copies and was translated into 37 languages. One of the most famous quotes from this book was ''The world bestows it big prizes, both in money and honors but for one thing, and that's initiative"

Review of Message to Garcia
In the short story Message to Garcia it is about Elbert Hubbard sending a message to a war general. The general works very hard to win the war between Spain and the US. This short story was supposed to show other people how hard he worked. It also showed his level of dedication towards working hard to achieve his goal. In my opinion after reading this I believe he is trying to tell people to be like the general and work hard and not have things just given to you and he is trying to show them what hard work looks like. Also I believe he wrote this to inform people on how to live well and improve the world around you.

My First Day At John Carroll
My first day at John Carroll was good for the most part. I really enjoyed learning all of the new things and seeing all of the things John Carroll has to offer. I think one of the highlights of my day was lunch and the fact that everyone is so nice. I enjoyed lunch because I was able to hang out with all my friends from last year and get to meet new friends. What I meant by everyone is so nice is that if I asked for help they were happy that I ask and they went out of my way to help. Today I was having trouble getting my locker open and I asked someone if they could help and they said they were more than happy too and that made me worry less about school. I think my biggest fear for going into John Carroll was not going where I needed to go and or not having what I needed to have. All though after today I realized that that's not going to happen because there are people around to help and are willing to help. At John Carroll for lunch I thought that the cafe food would be the typical nasty lunch food, but surprisingly it was all fresh and tasted very good. In all I had a very good first day at John Carroll
