Five Major Religion
The
first major religion we learned about was Christianity. Christianity has
approx. 2.2 Billion adherents. They are called christens. Their geographic
location is Europe, the Americas, south Africa. A couple major denominations
are Catholic, eastern orthodox, and protestant. There are many other
denominations that have been created over the years but those three are the
major ones. The founder of this religion is Jesus Christ. Their Holy Book is
“The Bible”. Their beliefs are Jesus is both human and divine – the of God. The
Pope is the head of the Catholic (the biggest denomination of this religion)
and the priest are the local authorities.
The
second biggest religion is the Islamic Religion. Their number of adherents is
approx. 1.5 Billion. They are called Muslims. Their Geographic Location is
Indonesia, the middle east, and north Africa. They’re founder is Muhammad. He
was believed to live from (570-632). Their holy book is the Qur’an(kor-an).
Their beliefs are they are monotheistic, Abrahamic, and they have five pillars.
They are testimony, prayer, alms, fasting, and pilgrimage. Muslims see their
purpose in life as serving and submitting to Allah (Their God) and serving
Islam.
The third
biggest religion is Hinduism. The Number of adherents is approx. 1.1 Billion.
They are called Hindus (hin-doos). They are mostly located in India and Nepal.
Their Holy Book is The Vedas. They believe the Vedas are eternal truths
revealed to ancient sages; composed in verse form (meant to be sung and easily
memorized). They have no specific founder, but they are the oldest religion.
They consider themselves as not really a religion but a way of life. They
believe in reincarnation (When they die their soul goes into another Human or
Animal and the process continues).
The
Fourth Major Religion is Buddhism. The number of adherents this religion has is
500 million to 1.5 billion. Their geographic location is approx. in southwest
Asia, China, Nepal, and Japan. Their holy book is the Tripitaka (Pali Canon),
Mahayana Sutras and the Tibetan Book of the Dead are three major noncanonical
Buddhist texts. The founder of Buddhism is Siddhartha Gautama.
Lastly Judaism.
Judaism is a small religion and not the firth largest, but it is one of the
most major religions in the world. Judaism would have millions and millions more
of followers/believers but since the Holocaust happened there are millions of less
Jews in the world. The Jewish Religion has about 13 million followers. Before
the Holocaust there were about 13 million Jews and if the Holocaust didn’t happen
and for every two people the had about 1.5 children on average there would be
about 270,625,000 Jews and that’s a very rough estimate because I didn’t include
people who couldn’t have children and are to old to have children, if the
people had more than 1.5 children. This religion is an Abrahamic religion.
Their Holy Book is called the Torah. Jews are monotheistic so that means they
only believe in one God.
