Test Today/Last Class

Today we had our final test and it was out last class. The test was hard because I kept getting Hinduism and Buddhism facts mixed up. Today is also our last class because this was a semester course so we only took it for the first half of the year(1st semester) and then we take a different class for the second semester. The class is called Western Civilization with Mr Fendryk. I've never had a conversation with Mr. Fendryk or have been in one of his classes so I don't know him and how he teachers so this is going to be new and interesting. I'm going to miss this class it was fun learning and doing everything this semester.

Five Major Religions

Ben Fetzer                                                                                                                                     1/15/19
Five Major Religion

The first major religion we learned about was Christianity. Christianity has approx. 2.2 Billion adherents. They are called christens. Their geographic location is Europe, the Americas, south Africa. A couple major denominations are Catholic, eastern orthodox, and protestant. There are many other denominations that have been created over the years but those three are the major ones. The founder of this religion is Jesus Christ. Their Holy Book is “The Bible”. Their beliefs are Jesus is both human and divine – the of God. The Pope is the head of the Catholic (the biggest denomination of this religion) and the priest are the local authorities.

The second biggest religion is the Islamic Religion. Their number of adherents is approx. 1.5 Billion. They are called Muslims. Their Geographic Location is Indonesia, the middle east, and north Africa. They’re founder is Muhammad. He was believed to live from (570-632). Their holy book is the Qur’an(kor-an). Their beliefs are they are monotheistic, Abrahamic, and they have five pillars. They are testimony, prayer, alms, fasting, and pilgrimage. Muslims see their purpose in life as serving and submitting to Allah (Their God) and serving Islam.

The third biggest religion is Hinduism. The Number of adherents is approx. 1.1 Billion. They are called Hindus (hin-doos). They are mostly located in India and Nepal. Their Holy Book is The Vedas. They believe the Vedas are eternal truths revealed to ancient sages; composed in verse form (meant to be sung and easily memorized). They have no specific founder, but they are the oldest religion. They consider themselves as not really a religion but a way of life. They believe in reincarnation (When they die their soul goes into another Human or Animal and the process continues).

The Fourth Major Religion is Buddhism. The number of adherents this religion has is 500 million to 1.5 billion. Their geographic location is approx. in southwest Asia, China, Nepal, and Japan. Their holy book is the Tripitaka (Pali Canon), Mahayana Sutras and the Tibetan Book of the Dead are three major noncanonical Buddhist texts. The founder of Buddhism is Siddhartha Gautama.

Lastly Judaism. Judaism is a small religion and not the firth largest, but it is one of the most major religions in the world. Judaism would have millions and millions more of followers/believers but since the Holocaust happened there are millions of less Jews in the world. The Jewish Religion has about 13 million followers. Before the Holocaust there were about 13 million Jews and if the Holocaust didn’t happen and for every two people the had about 1.5 children on average there would be about 270,625,000 Jews and that’s a very rough estimate because I didn’t include people who couldn’t have children and are to old to have children, if the people had more than 1.5 children. This religion is an Abrahamic religion. Their Holy Book is called the Torah. Jews are monotheistic so that means they only believe in one God.

Test Review Day

In class today, we went over some of the things that are going to be on the test on the 17th. What our teacher said was that the test was going to have all the major religions that we were talking about in class the past couple days and it will have some of that religions facts listed, and we must match the fact with the religion. I like when teachers tell us what the test is going to look like and what’s going to be on it word by word because then we know what to study and the scenario where there’s something on the test that we had no clue that it was going to be on there, then we don’t know it and we have to guess won’t happen. I will have to study a lot for this because my grade isn’t too hot in this class and I want to, 1. Get a good grade in the class, and 2. Finish off the class strong because the semester is almost over.

World Religion Class Work

Question 1. The fist Vedic text was called Rig-Veda. This means knowledge of the hymns of praise. There are 1,017 hymns in this Vedic. The second Veda is the Samaveda. This means Knowledge of the melodies. There are 1,028 hymns inside this Veda. The next Veda is called Yajurveda. This means knowledge of the sacrificial formulas. There are 1,017 hymns in this Veda. Lastly the fourth one is the Atharvaveda. This means knowledge of the magic formulas. There 1,017 hymns on the Veda.
Question 2. The practice of indulgence in the catholic religion is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church. In a briefer description it’s a practice where he church will sell card like items to the people who have a family member or someone who dies that the want to get to heaven and at the time, they believed it would get the to heaven fast from purgatory. Martin Luther broke away from the catholic church because he believed that the pope was just using the whole gimmick of buying indulgences to make money. Also, he believed that there were many things wrong with the church at the time (95 to be exact) and that’s how he came up with the 95 Thesis.
Question 3: The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and all able-bodied Muslims are required to perform it once in their lifetime. The Hajj is seen as a chance to wipe clean past sins and start fresh. Many seek to deepen their faith on the Hajj, with women taking on the Islamic hair covering known as "hijab" upon returning from the pilgrimage. Today's Class

In today's class we started a new power point on the five major religions in the world. Christianity was the largest and then came Islam, then Hinduism, then Buddhism, then lastly Judaism. The religion I found most interesting was Buddhism. I found Buddhism the most interesting because they believe your body is like cloths and when it gets old you take them off (you die) and find a new pair (reincarnation). Also I found their four noble truths cool and the founders backstory cool as well.

Today's Class and The Day Before Essays Are Due

In today's class we had the whole class period to work on our essays. I feel confidant about my essay because when its mostly opinion and not just strait finding and writing down facts its more enjoyable and makes me feel more confidant. I enjoy typing essays like these because when I first start I normally procrastinate and put it off to the last second but when I really start going I like it and I get down some really good things and a lot of teachers I've had in the past have really enjoyed reading my essays. On this essay though once I got cranking I looked at my screen and I said to myself "oh my I've already got so much". Also when I normally get done long papers like this I like to look at it and see what I've accomplished.
